History

First introducted in 1947 and hauled by a steam locomotive, the original Australind was the final link in the provision of a newly coordinated rail-road service network throughout the State’s south-west.

In the mid 60's the Australind changed to a diesel-electric locomotive and due to the internal features the train was considered to be more stylish than air travel.

In 1987 the self-powered diesel units were introduced and the Australind took on the marketing slogan 'the train that thinks it is a plane'.

The Australind has travelled an estimated 6 million kilometres.
